Until the middle of the 20th century, the Sisters of the Congregation and their students thought of this as the authentic portrait of Marguerite Bourgeoys.

The original portrait

This is the authentic portrait of Marguerite Bourgeoys as painted the day after her death on January 12, 1700 by Pierre Le Ber.

The original can be seen at Marguerite Bourgeoys Museum located next to Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel in Old Montreal.
