We have all been concerned to hear of the violent
earthquake (7.5 to 7.8 on the Richter scale) that has shaken Central
America, and in a very special way El Salvador. It seems that there
are probably many more deaths than those already accounted for, many
the result of landslides. We have received the following information
concerning our sisters there.
When the earthquake occurred around 11:00 a.m. on Saturday
January 13th, five of our sisters, as well as a visiting
Ursuline sister, were in our "Buen Socorro" house in San
Salvador. None of them was hurt, but everyone was deeply frightened,
and there have been over 500 after-shocks since then. |
| Apparently there was no important
damage to the house beyond a few cracks in the wall. The
interruption of electricity means that our sisters are living with
the water they collect from their cistern with a pail. We have heard
that the hosts were scattered in the chapel, as well as the books.
We can only imagine the sense of insecurity they and the whole
population must feel. Let us remain in deep communion with our
sisters and friends from El Salvador, with all of Marguerite
Bourgeoys’s family in Central America, in this hour of such great
suffering. |
