On May 20th, 2001, approximately 90
Sisters, family and friends gathered to celebrate Sr. Ellen’s 100th
birthday. The celebration began with liturgy at 11:30 A.M. in the
convent chapel. Sr. Kathleen Deignan, CND led the singing which
filled the chapel echoing the joy of the day. Fr. Joseph McCarthy,
our chaplain, led the congregation in prayer and thanksgiving for
Sr. Ellen’s long life and her great gifts which she has shared
with us for 78 years of religious profession.
After the liturgy, everyone was invited to the
dining room for a delicious meal during which many stories were told
of Sr. Ellen’s goodness, generosity, and kindness to the many
students and families whose lives she has touched these many years.
Ellen’s grandnephew, Mark McGuinness, traveled from Washington, DC
to be with her and represent the family. Two of her first grade
students from St. Anthony’s in Providence, RI, Brother Denis
(Gordon) Clark, OFM and Claire Ducharme Crohan, were present and
spoke of how special Sr. Ellen and the CND are to them. Sr. Ellen
has a wonderful sense of humor and stories were told of the
escapades she initiated over the years. She is woman of great common
sense, joy in living and deep faith which have sustained her all
through her life.
Sr. Ellen is very grateful to everyone for
making her 100th birthday such a special day. She
thoroughly enjoyed every minute and is still talking about how
wonderful the day was. |
