On
November 26th, Sister Mary Lou Cranston*, testifying before the
House of Commons Standing Committee on Health in Ottawa, addressed the use
of embryos for stem cell research, on behalf of the Catholic Health
Association of Canada**.
News that American researchers have created human embryos through
cloning highlights the need for strong legislation to prohibit such
research in Canada.

* Dr Mary Lou Cranston, CND, Director of St. Joseph’s
College Ethics Centre in Edmonton is no stranger to the ethical issues
that one confronts in the health care setting. She is the on-call ethicist
for four Catholic Health Care facilities in Edmonton as well as the ethics
consultant for all fourteen Catholic Health Care facilities in the
province of Alberta. She is a member of the Catholic Health Association of
Canada Ethics Network and of the Canadian Bioethics Society. Dr Cranston
has given numerous lectures/presentations/workshops on various theological
and ethics topics, especially current medical ethics issues.
