Celebrating 100 years
of CND presence

Sisters honoured for their contribution to community of Holy Redeemer Parish
Sydney, Nova Scotia

Holy Redeemer Church was packed on August 9th, 2002 as a special thanksgiving mass was held as part of the 100th anniversary of the presence in the area of the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame.
Bishop Colin Campbell, of the Diocese of Antigonish, said during the service: "This is a mass that each of us can celebrate in a different way because the presence of the CND has meant so many things to everyone."
The CND’s first arrived at Holy Redeemer Church in 1902 to teach young parishioners. Over the past 10 decades, 180 sisters have lived and worked in Holy Redeemer Convent, some spending upwards of 30 years there.

"The nuns helped us in so many aspects of our lives and took a personal interest in us. They performed a very special mission. Their influence is still strongly felt and their good works live on. They’ve certainly served the parish well for 100 years."

The impact they had on the community over that time has not been forgotten. I know the kind of work they did here and they’re terrific," said parishioners reminiscing about their experience with the CND’s.

May they continue happily on their journey of faith and service.
