MITCH: ONE YEAR
LATER...
October 26, 1998 - Hurricane Mitch devastates
Central American countries, causing thousands of deaths and leaving
hundreds of thousands of families completely destitute. Humanitarian
aid is quickly organized and the Congregation of Notre Dame has a
predominant reason to take part in it since several of its members
work in Honduras and Guatemala. The Congregation decides to become
involved in the project "One roof, one home" set up by the
Canadian Centre for International Studies and Cooperation (CECI).
October 25, 1999 - On the eve of the anniversary
of Mitch, Sister Monique Courchesne, CND, a missionary who has been
living in Honduras for more than 30 years, confirmed that there was
still much to be done. The rainy season (from June to December)
brings new problems: vast regions have once again been flooded and
each week there are new disaster-stricken families. However, the
projects for the construction of houses are gradually making
progress. The need for international help continues to exist and the
reconstruction will still take a great deal of time and effort.
