May we introduce you to
L'ATELIER LA GIRELLE, ARTS ET LETTRES?
It is a place to meet, to do
ceramics, to learn the secrets of weaving, to discover the joys of
reading and writing. Located at Centre 7400 in the Villeray
district of Montreal, La Girelle is directed by Sisters Lisette
Drainville and Annette Émond, C.N.D, who welcome people from many
different countries.
During the fall semester, many women came to
begin their study of French;
others
wanted to improve their skills.
In ceramics,
after more than 10 weeks of demanding training, students were able
to master techniques of clay throwing and moulding--and they've
produced some amazing results!
Those interested in weaving
have had the chance to become familiar with a loom. They've
learned how to prepare the weaving loom, to differentiate various
fibres, to recognize the warp and the weft, and to make some
beautiful scarves,
samples, and small linen pieces, of which they're very proud!
At Christmas time, the semester ended with an
exhibition of our students works. Most of them were so happy to
give their beautiful handmade works as presents to their children
and grand-children, while keeping some precious meaningful items
for themselves.
Following in Marguerite
Bourgeoys footsteps, LAtelier
La Girelle wishes to continue, in its own way, the work
performed in the Sewing Room at the beginning of the Colony,
encouraging manual work and continuing the teaching of French as
Marguerite Bourgeoys did in the Stable-School.
Come to visit us so that you can see what we
are doing at lAtelier La Girelle!
You are most welcome!
