Sr. Jeannine Berger, CND, founder and director of
Le Baluchon with 2 young participants.

Educational support center for the prevention of dropping out

Have you heard about Le Baluchon?

A quiet place in south-west Montreal (the Saint-Henri area) which welcomes elementary and high school students of the neighborhood 4 days a week.

We offer:

  • individualized attention for students with learning difficulties
  • homework assistance to students after school
  • sewing, knitting, embroidery, handicrafts and cooking
  • educational, religious and cultural activities
  • a summer camp for 6th grade and high school students.
Where do our young people come from?
  • more than 25 ethnic groups
  • often from uneducated single-parent families
  • their main difficulty: poor knowledge of French, making it hard for them to be integrated into society.

Who are our volunteers?

Lay people as well as sisters who are all experienced and qualified teachers help the young to make them aware of their possibilities and develop their talents.

Director of the Center

Sister Jeannine Berger, CND has received the Governor General of Canada award and the "Plume d’or" award from Paul Gérin-Lajoie Foundation for Education. And she was named "Personality of the week" by La Presse in April 2001.

Thanks to Sr Jeannine's passion for education, Marguerite Bourgeoys’s heart  is still beating at le Baluchon!

We believe that guiding, encouraging and supporting students
in a warm and friendly atmosphere can prevent academic failure.
If you are concerned about education and have experience in teaching,
get in touch with Le Baluchon. Qualified volunteers are always needed.
