in Canada long before it existed as a country.
-
| 17th
century |
in 1659 five French women begin the
Congregation in Montreal, in Quebec. |
| 18th century |
in 1727 the first CND sister, with two
lay women, begins teaching girls in Louisburg, in Nova Scotia. |
| mid-19th century |
in 1841 the first CND mission is
established in Ontario;
later, sisters open schools in New Brunswick and in Prince Edward Island. |
| late 20th century |
the CND spreads as far as the Canadian
West, in Alberta, in British Columbia and in the Yukon. |
So that now, at the beginning of the 21st century, we can be found from one ocean to the
other, in 7 of the 10 Canadian provinces. We are about 1400 sisters--1000 French-speaking
and 420 English-speaking; and over 500 Associates--180 French-speaking and 370,
English-speaking.
